Sales Cover Letter Examples for Any Sales Position
By Coen de Waal, Founder of CareerToolbelt·Updated
This page gives you three complete sales cover letters, a fill-in template and a checklist for writing a cover letter for a sales position today. The letters are labeled by role: a general sales position (annotated), a B2B sales executive and a short sales associate letter, each ready to copy and adapt to a specific posting.
Short answer
Open a sales cover letter with the posting title, the company name and one checkable fact about what they sell. Prove it in the second paragraph with one number and its period: quota attainment, pipeline built or close rate. Name the sales method and CRM from the posting and show how you used them. Close by asking for a 20-minute call.
Sales cover letter, application letter or motivation letter?
Cover letter is the US term. A sales application letter, a sales motivation letter and a sales covering letter (the UK usage) all mean the same one-page document, so write one letter, not three. The usual advice is 250 to 400 words on one page: short letters get read, long ones get skimmed. Open with Dear and the hiring manager's name rather than To whom it may concern; see the guides to cover letter greetings and how long a cover letter should be. If the posting asks for a simple application letter, use the short sales associate letter as your model.
Sales cover letter example for a sales position, annotated
Marisol Vega · , Account Executive, Mid-Market, Brightline Logistics Software → to Sales Representative, Mid-Market · , Posting: Sales Representative, Mid-Market, Kestrel Payroll · , USA · , 245 words
The posting asks for
Carry a $900K annual new-business quota
Build pipeline through outbound prospecting
Run consultative discovery calls
Keep HubSpot pipeline and forecast current
Dear Ms. Okafor,
I'm applying for the Sales Representative, Mid-Market posting at Kestrel Payroll1. Two of my logistics customers moved their payroll to Kestrel this year because their operations teams wanted hourly-shift reporting that the big HR suites bury three menus deep, and I'd like to sell that same story to the 50-to-500-employee companies on your target list.
1Note 1: Line one names the posting and company exactly, then the next sentence adds a product fact about Kestrel the hiring manager can check.
At Brightline Logistics Software I carry a $750,000 annual quota for new mid-market business. I closed FY2025 at 121 percent2, which came to $907,000 in new annual recurring revenue across 34 deals, an average deal of $26,700 and a 31 percent close rate from first demo. About 70 percent of that pipeline was mine from the start: 60 calls and 40 personalized emails a day3, sequenced in HubSpot.
2Note 2: Quota, period and the revenue behind it, in one sentence. The $900K target in the posting now looks like a step up, not a leap.
3Note 3: The posting says outbound prospecting; she answers with daily volume rather than the word itself, which is what a sales manager wants to hear.
Your posting asks for consultative discovery, and that is how I sell. I run SPIN-style calls4: the prospect's current payroll process first, then the problem it causes, then what that problem costs them each pay cycle, before I show a single screen. With payroll buyers the implication question that lands hardest is what one missed shift-differential correction costs them in overtime recalculations and employee complaints. My HubSpot records are updated the day a call ends, so my manager has never had to chase me for a forecast.
4Note 4: She names a recognized method and shows its steps. SPIN asks Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff questions [1], which maps directly to the consultative requirement.
I'd welcome a 20-minute call5 to walk you through how I would build a Kestrel pipeline in my first 90 days. I'm available any weekday after 2 p.m. Eastern.
5Note 5: The close asks for a specific next step and offers a time, the way she would close a prospect. No hoping, no thanking in advance.
Sincerely,
Marisol Vega
Every paragraph answers one requirement from the posting, and every claim carries a number with its period. The letter reads like a rep who already knows the product and the CRM, which is the point of a sales cover letter.
Sales executive cover letter example
Devon Alcaraz · , Senior Account Executive, Harrowgate Analytics → to Sales Executive, Enterprise Accounts · , Posting: Sales Executive, Enterprise Accounts (Southeast), Pelora Systems · , USA · , 288 words
Show letterHide letter
Dear Mr. Castellano,
I'm applying for the Sales Executive, Enterprise Accounts posting covering the Southeast at Pelora Systems. Your posting asks for someone who can grow a book of existing supply-chain customers while opening new logos in food and beverage manufacturing, which is the mix I have run for the past four years.
At Harrowgate Analytics I own a $4.2 million book across 38 enterprise accounts in Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas. In FY2025 I grew that book 28 percent through expansion, mostly by moving plant-level pilots to multi-site contracts, and I signed six new logos worth $1.9 million in first-year contract value. My largest new logo, a frozen-foods manufacturer with 11 plants, took 14 months and 23 stakeholder meetings to close.
I build new-logo pipeline with account-based prospecting: I map the buying committee in LinkedIn Sales Navigator, run two-week Outreach sequences aimed at the VP of Operations and the plant controllers at once, and use Gong call reviews to tighten my discovery questions every quarter. Salesforce is my system of record, and my pipeline is clean enough that my director uses it unchanged for the quarterly forecast.
I also lost a $600,000 renewal last year because I treated a new CFO as a formality instead of a new buyer. Every account plan I write now names the next executive change I expect and what I will do about it before it happens.
The posting calls the role Sales Executive; I have done the same territory work under the titles sales consultant and outside sales representative, and the work is what I am applying for. Could we set up a 30-minute call next week? I can share my current account plans for two comparable manufacturers.
Sincerely,
Devon Alcaraz
The letter stays an individual contributor's letter, covering territory, book size, new logos, expansion and tooling, plus one candid lost deal that senior readers trust more than a list of wins. Once you are setting territories and quotas for other reps 3, you need a sales manager cover letter instead.
Short sales associate cover letter example
Tasha Lindqvist · , Retail Sales Associate, Ridgeline Outfitters → to Inside Sales Associate · , Posting: Inside Sales Associate, Fieldstone Home Energy · , USA · , 137 words
Show letterHide letter
Dear Mr. Reyes,
I'm applying for the Inside Sales Associate posting at Fieldstone Home Energy. I want to sell for Fieldstone because your reps explain the 25-year panel warranty in plain language on the first call, the same way I sell at the register.
At Ridgeline Outfitters I handle about 90 transactions per shift and attach a protection plan to 38 percent of footwear sales, against a store average of 22 percent. I do it by asking two questions about how the customer will use the product before I mention the plan. I log every return reason in our point-of-sale system so the floor manager can see which products need a better pitch.
I'd welcome a 15-minute call to hear how your inside team qualifies inbound leads, and I can start within two weeks.
Sincerely,
Tasha Lindqvist
A short, simple sales application letter works here because the posting needs proof of one thing: she sells more than the person next to her, and she can say why. For a representative role with a quota, use the salesperson cover letter example; with no customer-facing job yet, see the no-experience answer.
Sales cover letter template you can fill in
1 · 1 · The posting
I'm applying for the Job title posting at Company. I have followed how you sell Product, and one thing about it convinced me I could sell it well.
Copy the title and company from the posting header exactly. Add one sentence with the product fact, taken from the company's own site, a customer case study or a demo you have seen.
2 · 2 · The number
In my current role I closed Period at Quota % of quota, and the deals behind that figure came from the kind of accounts this posting targets.
Follow with revenue or deal count, average deal size and close rate, each with its period, from your last comp statement or quarterly review. No quota yet? Use calls per day, demos booked, lead-to-opportunity conversion, upsell rate or transactions per shift.
3 · 3 · The method
Your responsibilities list asks for Method, and that is how I sell. My pipeline and forecast live in CRM, updated the same day.
Between those two sentences, describe the steps you run on a call. Take the method words from the responsibilities list in the vacancy (consultative, SPIN, account-based, outbound) and name the CRM the posting names. SPIN questions run Situation, Problem, Implication, Need-payoff [1], so describe them in that order.
4 · 4 · The ask
I'd welcome a 20-minute call to discuss Next step, and I'm available any weekday afternoon.
The next step is something you would do in the role: a 90-day pipeline plan, a territory review, a walkthrough of your account plans. Close like you would close a prospect.

Sales cover letter checklist
Weak versus strong sales cover letter sentences
The opening line
Weak
I am applying for the sales job you advertised. I have a lot of experience in sales and believe I would be a good fit for your company.
Strong
I'm applying for the Inside Sales Representative posting at Corbin Dental Supply. Your next-day delivery on handpiece repairs is the reason two practices I call on switched suppliers last year, and I'd like to make that pitch to the 400 practices in your Ohio territory.
What changed: Specific beats adjective: the posting title, the company and a checkable product fact replace a good fit and a lot of experience.
The proof sentence
Weak
I have experience with various sales techniques and have worked on many projects that increased sales.
Strong
I finished FY2025 at 118 percent of a $1.2 million quota, almost entirely through outbound to mid-market retail chains, with a 29 percent close rate from first demo.
What changed: Number plus period plus how: a quota percentage, the dollar quota, the fiscal year and the channel turn a claim into something a sales manager can verify in a reference call.
The close
Weak
I hope to hear from you soon and thank you in advance for considering my application.
Strong
I'd welcome a 20-minute call next week to walk through the 30 dental practices I would call in my first month and why. Tuesday or Thursday afternoon works on my side.
What changed: Ask, do not hope: a sales close names the next step, the length and a time, exactly as the candidate would do with a prospect.
Sales cover letter questions
How do I write a sales cover letter with no experience?
Lead with a customer-facing number from any job you have held: transactions per shift, upsell or attach rate, tips as a share of sales, or sign-ups collected. Keep it to three paragraphs: the posting, one proof number, the ask. The short sales associate letter shows the shape. Technical sales representative roles often expect a bachelor's degree 4, so aim first at associate, inside sales or retail postings that ask for attitude and numbers rather than a quota history.
Is a sales application letter the same as a cover letter?
Yes. In the US, sales application letter, motivation letter and cover letter name the same one-page document sent with your resume, and the structure is identical: posting, number, method, ask. The only difference is the posting's wording, so use whichever term the employer uses in your subject line and first sentence. See the note on what the letter is called for length and salutation norms.
What do you say in a sales cover letter with experience?
Say your quota attainment for a named period, the revenue or deal count behind it, the method you sell with and the CRM you forecast in. Add one lost deal and what you changed afterward; experienced hiring managers trust a candidate who can name a miss more than one who lists only wins. The sales executive cover letter example does all four in under 350 words, and your resume should carry the same numbers.
What are 5 common sales cover letter mistakes?
Five that cost sales candidates the most: no number at all, a first line that never names the posting, the word passionate standing in for proof, a letter that spills onto a second page, and a close that hopes to hear back instead of asking for a call. Run your draft against the sales cover letter checklist; each mistake is one of its yes-or-no tests.
Can I use AI to write a sales cover letter?
Yes, as a draft, but your quota numbers, your method and the posting's exact phrases must come from you, because an AI tool can invent plausible-sounding figures when it has none. Paste the posting, your resume and the four-part structure from the template, then replace every generic sentence with a number and a period. The guide on writing a cover letter with AI covers the prompts and the edits that matter.
